Coinbase has officially expanded its suite of financial tools to allow businesses to accept USD Coin (USDC) payments directly from autonomous AI agents. Announced on July 23, 2026, the strategic rollout includes updated merchant capabilities, advanced trading controls, and a dedicated developer kit designed to bridge the growing gap between autonomous software and legacy online payment systems.
The move comes as automated traffic increasingly dominates digital infrastructure. Coinbase revealed that software-generated traffic surpassed human visitors on its Base documentation pages for the first time in June, underscoring a fundamental shift in web activity. Company officials noted that most existing online payment systems still operate on the assumption of a human clicking a button, leaving businesses without native ways to monetize autonomous agent interactions.
To address this gap, Coinbase Business has integrated native x402 support powered by Coinbase Payments, enabling merchants to accept, track, reconcile, and cash out internet-based, pay-per-use USDC transactions from AI agents. Merchants using the platform can also earn rewards on idle USDC balances—currently listed at a 3.35% annual rate, depending on the region—while benefiting from settled crypto transactions that eliminate traditional chargeback risks.
Alongside merchant tools, the crypto exchange introduced real-time market streaming and conditional action commands to its “Coinbase for Agents” feature. Users can now set strict guardrails that direct AI agents to execute specific financial actions automatically, such as liquidating assets if Bitcoin drops below a specific threshold or canceling unfilled orders after a set duration.
For software creators, the Coinbase Developer Platform launched a streamlined SDK aimed at simplifying how developers integrate x402 payment requirements into APIs, web services, and Model Context Protocol servers. Built on the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” standard, the protocol allows AI agents to automatically receive payment requests, sign stablecoin transactions, and gain instant service access without human intervention.
This latest update builds upon previous integrations, including Amazon’s adoption of x402 within Bedrock AgentCore Payments earlier this year. While Coinbase has not publicly disclosed expected transaction volumes, the expanded features are now rolling out across eligible markets, with Coinbase Business currently available to users in the United States and Singapore.
