HSBC has officially launched HSBC RedCoin (Ticker: RCHKD), marking the financial institution’s first stablecoin, which is now available on its PayMe platform. Pegged to the Hong Kong Dollar and underpinned by HSBC’s technology and security infrastructure, the new digital currency is licensed and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) under a stablecoin issuer license granted in April 2026. The launch strictly complies with the financial crime controls outlined in Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance.
Designed for everyday transactions, HSBC RedCoin will gradually roll out to over 3.3 million PayMe users in the coming days. App users can activate a dedicated stablecoin wallet to perform instant peer-to-peer transfers to friends and family, as well as peer-to-merchant payments across more than 100,000 local merchants. The rollout addresses findings from a recent HSBC study indicating that ease of access through existing applications and faster settlement times are primary catalysts for stablecoin adoption.
The debut of HSBC RedCoin represents a broader shift toward programmable digital networks, according to HSBC executives. Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth, highlighted that the move helps local retail customers navigate the transition from traditional financial infrastructure to data-rich digital networks backed by global banking security. To incentivize adoption at launch, HSBC is offering exclusive PayMe transaction discounts alongside RewardCash rewards.
Beyond consumer payments, HSBC plans to expand the functional scope of HSBC RedCoin later this year by extending wallet capabilities to the primary HSBC HK Mobile Banking App. The bank intends to enable customers to subscribe to tokenized investment products using the stablecoin, starting with a new share class of its HKD money market fund. John O’Neill, Managing Director of Digital Assets and Currencies, noted that future development will also encompass wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.
The initiative builds on HSBC’s ongoing digital asset strategy in Hong Kong, which includes involvement in the HKMA’s e-HKD+ Pilot Programme and Project Ensemble. HSBC RedCoin joins the bank’s existing suite of digital offerings, such as institutional digital bonds on the HSBC Orion platform, retail HSBC Gold Tokens, and the HSBC Tokenised Deposit Service. Safeguarding for the newly minted stablecoin is managed directly through HSBC Digital Assets Custody.
