Mastercard Launches Advanced Risk Intelligence Solution to Secure Global Stablecoin Payments

Mastercard has announced the launch of Stablecoin Security, a new risk intelligence solution designed to enable safer stablecoin payments for financial institutions. Unveiled at Money20/20 USA, the solution combines traditional payment context with advanced blockchain analytics to evaluate risk throughout the entire payment lifecycle, helping institutions identify fraud, scams, sanctions, and financial crime before funds move on-chain. The initiative launches with initial partners Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, both alumni of Mastercard’s Start Path startup engagement program.

The creation of Stablecoin Security addresses the growing complexity of stablecoin transactions, particularly in cross-border and business-to-business environments. Recent data analyzing nearly 600 million stablecoin transfers across 141 million Ethereum transactions revealed that almost 60% involved multi-step processes rather than simple peer-to-peer transfers. This complexity makes it difficult for institutions to properly evaluate risk during global trade settlements or multi-currency transfers. By offering a consolidated view of potential threats, Mastercard aims to bridge this security gap and give financial institutions greater clarity and confidence.

Delivered through an API, the platform analyzes risk signals including origin of funds, exposure to restricted entities, and transaction context to generate real-time risk scores prior to transaction completion. The solution integrates into existing compliance and case management systems, allowing institutions to support stablecoin transactions without establishing entirely new risk management operations. For instance, a bank processing a cross-border supplier payment can use the API to evaluate payment and blockchain data instantly, deciding whether to approve or flag the transaction for further review.

Mastercard plans to expand the reach of Stablecoin Security globally by 2027 through strategic partnerships and ecosystem integrations. Partners Borderless.xyz, which connects financial institutions to licensed stablecoin providers across 113 countries, and Keyrails, focused on high-value trade payments in emerging markets, are integrating the intelligence tool into active payment flows. Additionally, Mastercard intends to leverage BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure provider acquired in August 2026, to scale adoption. The solution launches first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability scheduled for 2027.
